The ingredients needed to prepare Sambar:
- Prepare 1 cup Toor Dal
- Get 2 cups water
- Provide Lemon sized Tamarind
- Prepare 2 tomatoes
- Provide 2 drumsticks
- Prepare 1 Raw Banana
- You need 2 Big onions or 15-20 Sambar Onions
- Get 1 Big Madras Cucumber
- Take 2 Big carrots
- Provide 10-15 Lady Fingers (optional)
- Use Salt as per taste
- Get 3 tsp Sambar Powder
- You need 2 tsp Red chilli Powder
- Prepare 3 sprigs Curry leaves
- Use 2 tbsp oil
- Prepare 1 tsp mustard
- Use 1 tsp Jeera
- Use 4-5 garlic pods
- Take 1/4 tsp hing
- Prepare 1/4 tsp turmeric
- Take Water as required
Instructions to make Sambar:
- Wash and clean toordal, put two cups of water and cook it in a cooker for 3 whistles
- Keep vegetables ready and wash and peel as required
- Cut vegetables in your desired shape.
- Put a vessel on stove, pour 2tbsp oil. Add mustard and jeera, when they start splitting add hing and turmeric. Mix well. Put all the cut vegetables. Cut banana just before adding it to the remaining vegetables.
- Add Salt and put 1 cup of water for the vegetables to cook. Add tomato after 5mins. Cover the vessel with a lid and cook the vegetables for 10 to 15mins
- After 3 whistles, let the dal cool. Mash the dal
- Soak tamarind in water to extract the pulp
- Now add the cooked vegetables in the mashed dal and let the vegetables cook in the dal.
- Mix well. Add tamarind pulp and water as required. Sprinkle curry leaves
- Once sambar starts boiling, add sambar powder. Mix well.
- Finally, add red chilli powder, mix well and take off the stove. Put a sprig of Curry leaves.
- Serve with white rice.
