The ingredients needed to prepare Appe Daal Vadas:
- Provide 11/2 cups Bengal Gram or Chana Daal
- Get 1 tsp Salt
- You need 2 Sprigs Curry Leaves
- Provide 1 small bunch Coriander Leaves finely chopped
- Prepare 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Prepare 1/8 tsp Asafoetida
- Take 1/8 tsp Baking Soda
- Use 1 " Ginger shredded
- Provide 1 tsp Coriander seeds partially crushed
- Use 1/4 cup Buttermilk
- Use 1/4 cup Oil
Instructions to make Appe Daal Vadas:
- Soak the lentils for a good 4 to 5 hours. Reserve some soaked seeds for mixing in the batter later on.
- Grind them with salt, curry leaves and buttermilk if using. Otherwise just use water. Grind them coarsely using as less water as possible. It should not be watery at all. Now mix in all the rest of the ingredients and the raw lentils reserved for mixing in the batter. If some seeds are remaining whole in the batter while grinding, it's perfectly okay.
- Heat an Appam patra or an Appe pan with one to two drops of oil in each appe mould. Cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. After done on one side, flip over and cook again for 2 to 3 minutes by drizzling 2 to 3 drops of oil in each mould.
- Crispy and crunchy daal vadas with a soft inside are ready to be served with any chutney or dip of your choice. Yummy, fully cooked and easily done in a few minutes without much oil, these daal vadas are a must try.
